ABSTRACT

The Lower Kalispei occupied the territory along the Pend Oreille River below Lake Pend Oreille in Idaho to the confluence of the Salmo River in British Columbia. The Upper Kalispei occupied the area around Lake Pend Oreille and up the Pend Oreille River to the confluence ofthe Clark Fork and Flathead Rivers near Plains, Montana. After the introduction of the horse, the territorial limit of the Upper Kalispei was extended eastward to the Mission Valley and Flathead Lake in Montana, and south to include the Bitterroot VaIley. It was in this area that they congregated with other Plateau groups to form "Bison-hunting task groups" for mutual protection to hunt on the Great Plains.
