ABSTRACT

SACANDFOX The Sac and Fox Nation is the largest ofthe three

tribes of Sac and Fox. At the time of contact with Europeans (1667), the Sac and Fox were two distinct Algonquian-speaking tribes occupying lands in the Michigan and Wisconsin Great Lakes area. The Sac were called Sauk (Asa ki waki, "People of the Yellow Earth"), until the late eighteenth century. The Fox were known as the Mesquaki (Muskwakiwuk, "Red Earth People"). After near annihilation, the two tribes joined forces for survival in the early 1700s, though they kept their tribai identities separate.
