ABSTRACT

In their own language, the Zuni people call themselves the A:shiwi. They and their ancestors have occupied the Zuni and Little Colorado River valleys for more than 2,000 years. Today all ofthe Zuni settlements are located on the main reservation. Zuni Pueblo, the principal town, was founded around 1350. Other settlements include outlying farming villages at Ojo Caliente, Pescado, Nutria, and Tekapo, and numerous "sheep camps" or ranches.
