ABSTRACT

I N April 1990, Immediately After The Census For 1990 Was Taken, Time featured a story entitled “Beyond the Melting Pot,” calling attention to the fact that the number of Asian immigrants coming into the United States, particularly to California, was growing rapidly. It said that “the ‘browning of America’ will alter everything in society, from politics and education to industry, values and culture.” 1 Even before that, the March 5,1990 issue of Time carried a cover story with a title, “A Promised Land?” which pointed out that “Asian immigrants and influence are transforming North America’s Pacific Coast.” According to the artide, the presence of Asian Americans has become conspicuous enough to make one wonder if this is “the rewinning of the West-by Korean entrepreneurs, Japanese finanders, Indian doctors, Filipino nurses, Vietnamese restauranteurs and Chinese engineers.” 2
