ABSTRACT

The men and women by most accounts the overwhelming majority of adjusters were men and thus earned the moniker "claims men" stood in the insurance companies' front ranks. Whatever the policy, automobile claims adjusters had, by all accounts, a difficult job. In addition to the legal and medical knowledge, Burton E. Emory argued that the "claim man" also had "to adjust as many different classes of claims as his Company handles lines of business and he must be intelligent in all these lines." Motor vehicle claims adjustments had a tremendous impact on the bottom line of the firms. This was particularly true of the difficult and expensive job of adjusting bodily injury claims. Claims adjusting were important to insurance companies for a number of reasons. Pennsylvania Indemnity's adjusters were given a lot of freedom to settle claims. This meant that well-trained adjusters were key to the company's success.
