ABSTRACT

Section 5.2 opens w i t h general considerations on quanti f icat ion i n n a t u r a l language. I introduce some of the issues of direct relevance to any and then present some exist ing proposals for characterising i t . T h e m a i n features are the unique versus double characterisation of any and its representation as a universal versus existential quantifier. However, an analysis of these theories shows that an impor tant cr i ter ion, not c learly identif ied, is the opposit ion between specific and nonspecific readings of indefinites.
