ABSTRACT

Russian army general. Born in the Ukraine on 13 August 1866, Danilov graduated from the Mikhailovsky Artillery School, served briefly as a line officer, and in 1892 graduated from the General Staff Academy. Although Danilov held some line posts, he made his reputation as a staff officer. He also taught at the General Staff Academy and wrote extensively on military subjects. Danilov rose rapidly in rank to the post of quartermaster general, which he held in 1914. Although the term quartermaster general implies supervising supplies and transportation, in the Russian army it was comparable in duties to an operations officer in Western armies. Danilov was therefore responsible for drafting military orders and supervising overall military planning.
