ABSTRACT

Like all postmodern inquiry, this paper finds its origins in odd and disparate places and represents the intersection of many issues that began as unrelated entities. For the first lecture of a world music class, I wanted to spark a discussion about the differences between musics of non-Western traditions, and music from non-Western traditions packaged for consumption in the West. Since most of the students had not yet heard any of the music for the course, this seemed a good way of finding out what their preconceived notions about “world music” might be.
