Voices of the Oppressed

One thing I remember about when I first started: I felt like a fish out of water. I don't know why I didn't think about it before I applied, but this is an extremely rural white town and I'm from an extremely urban Black town. That was very, very hard to deal with at first. I just wasn't used to being around that many White people and being the only Black person. That was the first time I would walk on a street and not see another Black person, Hispanic person, or for that matter another Asian person. It bothered me. It really, really bothered me.
