The Vision of John, Monk of St. Lawrence of Liege

Latin vision of heaven and hell, dated 1148–58. After an illness John visits the otherworld guided by his patron saint, Lawrence. He begins his visit at purgatory where he sees a group of monks sitting together suffering through privation of angels, light, and hope. These souls eventually progress through purgatory aided by the intercession of their patron saints and the faithful. John visits heaven where he encounters a great temple from which issue songs and music. Finally the temple disappears and John is led through the infernal regions by St. Maurice, eventually returning to his body.
