ABSTRACT

Japan is an island country stretching along the northeast coast of the Asian continent. It consists of four main islands: Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu from north to south with an additional 6,900 smaller islands. The total land area is 377,719 square kilometers, or 0.3% of the total land mass of the world. Japan is divided into 47 administrative regions; 43 prefectures and four special divisions.
