ABSTRACT
At Auschwitz, Hoss had four large gas cham bers built to accommodate up to 2,000 people at a time. Instead of using exhaust fumes, he used Zyklon B, or prussic acid. Originally, Zyklon B was a commercial pesticide. It was so toxic that manu facturers added an irritant to warn users to stay clear. The version used at the concentration camps had no irritants added, and in most cases the vic tims were unaware they were being gassed until near death.
