ABSTRACT

Nancy (5-29 September 1944) In the late summer of 1944, the American drive across France ground to a halt because of shortages of supplies and especially gasoline. Lieutenant General George S. Patton’s (q.v.) U.S. Third Army stopped shortly after crossing the Meuse River on 31 August. After a delay of several days, fuel supplies increased to the point where the Third Army could start moving again. On 4 September, Patton ordered Major General Manton Eddy’s (q.v.) XII Corps to seize the city of Nancy and prepare for an exploitation to the Rhine River.
