ABSTRACT
Rapido River ( 20-22 January 1944) [See map 1 on page 1311] On 20 January 1944, the U.S. 36th Infantry Division (ID) began a forty-eight-hour battle to establish bridgeheads on the west bank of the Rapido River. Their objective was to draw enemy reserves that could be used against the Anzio (q.v.) landings scheduled for 22 January, and to facilitate operations against the German strong point at Monte Cassino (q.v.).
