ABSTRACT
Moved by fear of the consequences of atomic weapons in Nazi hands, the scientists convinced Albert Einstein (q.v.) to convey their apprehen sions in a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt (q.v.) in October 1939. Intrigued by Einstein’s reference to “extremely powerful bombs of a new type,” Roosevelt authorized a coordinating com mission and later diverted military funds into the top-secret research.
