ABSTRACT
Gabreski, Francis (1919-) American lieutenant colonel, pilot. Born to Polish immigrant parents in Oil City, Pennsylvania, “Gabby” Gabreski nearly washed out of flight school, in which he had enlisted as an aviator ca det in July 1940. Commissioned in March 1941, he was assigned to the 45th Fighter Squadron, 15th Fighter Group, Wheeler Field, Hawaii.
