Lacey, James H. "G inger" (1917-1989) Royal Air Force sergeant and pilot. The top-scor­ ing surviving British fighter pilot of the Battle of Britain (q.v.), Sergeant J.H. Lacey was the son of a Yorkshire cattle dealer. He learned to fly in his late teens. In the summer of 1940, while serving with No. 501 Squadron, he shot down twentyseven German aircraft, (including the He-111 that bombed Buckingham Palace). Between August and October 1940, Lacey was credited with eigh­ teen enemy aircraft destroyed, six damaged, and four probables.
