ABSTRACT
Typically, our conception of work is limited to paid employment and ignores "unpaid work" or volunteer work. This narrow view of work often leads us to downplay the achievements of women and their involvement in social movements. The civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s serves as an example in which the participation of women was crucial to success but is generally ignored.
