ABSTRACT

The concept of integrated women is an ideal type that represents a woman who is oriented by a consciousness of the different alternatives—feminist, traditionalist, and androgynous—and who possesses the possibility of integrating these alternatives within a chosen lifestyle. An integrated woman is a career woman who has the opportunity to interplay the meanings of feminist, traditionalist or androgynous within her life by combining behaviors and attitudes from the different orientations. The concept of integrated women enables researchers to break through the limitations encountered in the labeling of women. It recognizes that while role strain has been the focus of research (Houseknecht and Macke 1981; Parelius 1975; Voydanoff 1988), there also is a need for research to explore the complementarities of roles.
