ABSTRACT
Nurses constitute the largest occupational group in the contemporary U.S. healthcare system, numbering over two million active employees (Loft and Kletke 1989). The role of nurses in the health-care system has changed dramatically in the past century or so, but nursing has always been overwhelmingly female.
