ABSTRACT

The students completed work revealed that the groups developed their band images and song lyrics using a variety of strategies to negotiate among the members of the groups what their band images would be and how they wanted others to read their images. The completed work by the bands demonstrated their understanding of reading popular cultural images and lyrics and constructing themselves using this process. The students incorporated both what they learned from the lesson as well as other media texts not discussed in class in order to form their images. These students, although all part of the same audience during the lesson, exerted their own personal beliefs to develop interesting and thought-provoking images that were unique. The chapter determines that teaching a lesson on critical literacy using music would certainly capture this particular group's interests. The Internet address printed on the album cover took them to the "Bad Boy, Inc." homepage.
