ABSTRACT
Palatinate Germans who answered William Penn's call for settlers in the early part of the eighteenth century. Mostly refugees from religious persecution, they became expert farmers, clannish in their personal and communal affairs, extremely pious, and linguistically insular in that they forswore the use of English and retained the old Low-German speech.
