ABSTRACT
How does one become a theatre designer? Like all jobs in the theatre there is no single route: designers learn by various mixes of formal and informal methods. It is possible to design professionally for theatre without any formal training in theatre design, or indeed in theatre or art, by just relying on talent and observation. But even the most splendid natural talent can usually benefit from a situation structured to encourage personal development through discovery.
