ABSTRACT

Laban's own example, train the eye by observing movement everywhere: in buses, trains, cars, restaurants, shops, in the factory, office, street and any place where there are people. Begin with general observations and gradually home into details. Similarly, observe movement on different occasions: people at work, involved in all kinds of recreation and festivity or simply in their everyday activities of eating, travelling and going about their usual round. Acquire some fundamental knowledge and understanding of Labanotation for example, Practical Kinetography Laban by Valerie Preston-Dunlop. Tape documentaries and other TV programmes and play short sequences back until you begin to recognize state-ments people are making with their body language. Similarly, video sequences of yourself doing various tasks and look thoughtfully at your own movement patterns. Finally, observation, analysis and memory can be used to create new ways of doing things. Experiment. Make up fresh sequences, both specific and abstract developed out of work, social and recreational patterns.
