ABSTRACT

The Princess of France (we’re never given a first name) is a very sharp, witty and straight-forward lady. Technically, she is on a diplomatic mission to the King of Navarre (now part in France and part in Spain) with her three attendant ladies. ‘Diplomacy’ turns to fun and much of the play is spent in verbal flirtations and battles of wits between her and her ladies and the King and his attendant lords. At this point she has just arrived for a deer hunt (probably with crossbows) with her ladies (Rosaline, Maria, and Katherine), Boyet (an attendant lord) and a forester. She could be as young as late teens.
