ABSTRACT

The Bawd is the keeper of a brothel. At the beginning of this scene she complains, ‘We were never so much out of creatures. We have but poor three, and they can do no more than they can do; and they with continual action are even as good as rotten’. Then a group of pirates arrive with the young Marina, the long-lost daughter of Pericles. The Bawd and her husband, Pandar, agree to buy Marina; and he leaves with the pirates to settle the finances, saying, ‘Wife take her in; instruct her what she has to do, that she may not be raw in her entertainment’. The Bawd starts by commenting on Marina to her servant Boult. She could be any age above about mid-twenties.
