ABSTRACT

The Duchess of York, Cicely Neville (1415-95) was the mother of Richard III. He was the youngest of her four sons, the eldest being Edward IV. She has just been comforting the son and daughter of her other son, George, Duke of Clarence, who has recently died. Suddenly, Queen Elizabeth (wife of Edward IV) enters ‘with her hair about her ears’ and in her wailings tells them that Edward is also dead. This is the Duchess’ rejoinder. She was in her late sixties at the time, but could be played younger.
