ABSTRACT

Scene designers were not known in the theatre, there was only a scene painter who worked on a yearly salary, and provided all that was needed in the way of scenery. It turned out that the scene designer had not even read the text of the play we were producing, he had no conception of the complicated spiritual and analytical work that is done on a play and part, and that helps the actor to round out the creative process of merging himself body and soul with the nature. Peoples are dependent on the playwright, and are in voluntary collaboration with him. Then suddenly he receives a packet from Yalta or the Caucasus, from the same designer who is off there somewhere enjoying the charms of nature. The theatre offers the easiest opportunity for that since thousands gather daily, whereas visitors in picture galleries are counted in tens.
