ABSTRACT

Stage flooring can consist of a multitude of various construction methods. Large, outdoor ‘rock and roll’ stages, for example, can be of scaffolding decked with timber and plywood, or of rented 2000 × 2000 mm (say) unitised steel bays. Trade shows tend to use rented proprietary ‘deck’ systems – with some ‘specials’ made to suit (in-fill units made especially for that show). Theatre generally prefers purpose-built flooring for each show, using stock rostra where possible. These are huge generalisations of course, but still largely true. A factor common to all types is that the flooring must be able to be broken down for transportation to and from venues. Even ‘permanent’ installations, such as museum projects, still tend to have flooring based upon this premise.
