ABSTRACT

In the theatre, most structures consist of flattage – frames (flats) that connect to their neighbours, forming the overall desired shape. A flat consists of a light but strong framework that is usually clad with a lightweight sheet material, say thin plywood or canvas. It may be strengthened by the use of stiffeners – on-edge timber battens fitted to the back of the flat. Conventionally, fiats were made of timber, but steel flats have been in common use for many years now.
