In the United Kingdom and European Union all employees have both rights and obligations under health and safety legislation. Stage management rarely have overall responsibility for Health and Safety on a production, but are nevertheless obliged to consider those aspects that may affect themselves and their colleagues. From the first design meeting onwards, they should be on the lookout for potential safety hazards and suggest solutions. The theatre industry is subject to the same regulations as any other. The regulations that apply to safe practice are laws approved by Parliament and are usually made under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, following proposals from the Health and Safety Commission.
