But the most uncomfortable style of dress was when they were so scanty that it was difficult to walk in them, and to make them tighter still, invisible petticoats were worn. They were woven in the stocking loom, and were like strait waist-coats, at least as I supposed, but only drawn down over the legs instead of over the arms so that when walking, you were obliged to take short and mincing steps. I was not long in discarding mine and, of course, shocking my juvenile acquaintances by my boldness in throwing off such a fashionable restraint.
