ABSTRACT

The litanies of functional illiteracy abound. The incapacity of the public in the domains of science and mathematics is a national scandal and there is no other industrialized nation that is so oblivious of the languages and cultures of others. Boolean connectives are seemingly not understood. In general the competent use of databases requires a careful, rather than a sloppy understanding of the words “and,” “or,” and “not.” Text editors by themselves do not repair grammar or clarify thought. A teacher who does not write well and regularly can hardly be expected to teach someone else to do so. The computational power of the digital home television receiver and its associated interface devices will be dramatically greater than the more powerful of todays personal computers. The TV receivers will be very widespread because the market driving their distribution is fundamentally a home entertainment market rather than a business or education market.
