ABSTRACT
Can Japanese literature be translated? Let me begin to answer that by way of anecdote. A prominent American scholar of Japan working in the social sciences recently told me of an experience from his graduate student days twenty years ago. It is certainly, I think, one of the most amusing stories about learning – and translating – Japanese.
