Japanese Diaries

The three best-known masterpieces of Heian diary literature, the diaries of Murasaki Shikibu and Izumi Shikibu and the Sarashina diary were translated into English of a kind in 1920, and a German translation of the Izumi Shikibu diary was made as early as 1885. The choice of these diaries reflected Japanese preferences that had evolved over the centuries.
