ABSTRACT
The title of this paper might also read: ‘On the difference between carrying something on your head in English and in Japanese.’ Although I talk mainly about expressions of movement in the Japanese language, my interest in this specific topic was stimulated by the different ways of expressing notions of carrying something in English and in Japanese. These differences are shared by other languages. German behaves in much the same way as English does and Korean in much the same way as Japanese does. So we can expect to come across some deep typological and/or historical (genetic or areal) differences between these languages during investigation.
