Synchronic and Diachronic Approaches to the noda Sentence

Much has been written on the noda sentence which is used extensively not only in conversational discourse but also in modern literature narrative. Much effort has been made especially since 1970 in search of a common denominator or a fundamental principle which could explain systematically the numerous functions of noda, but a generally acceptable theory is far from being achieved. ¹
