ABSTRACT

Kenneth E. McConnell, in chapter 8 of this volume, offers a comprehensive review of indirect (revealed preference) methods as they may be applied to measuring natural resource damages from hazardous waste emissions. However, in his desire to merely present and not advocate indirect methods, he may inadvertently undersell the use of indirect methods for valuation of damages. In this chapter, I admittedly advocate the use of indirect methods because, in my opinion, they provide a more defensible and plausible measure of damages than do alternative valuation techniques.
