ABSTRACT

The 1950s witnessed a spectacular rise in the popularity of bowling in America. During the 1953–1954 season, some 20,000,000 persons rolled balls on 85,000 alleys in 12,250 bowling establishments in the United States. Frank Blunk noted,

That represented an increase of 3,000,000 bowlers over the previous twelve months. The sport has been growing like that since the start of the last World War. Bowling palaces costing $1,500,000 to $2,000,000 each have sprung up in suburban areas throughout the nation to meet the demand.
