In m any operations, EMS professionals possess either direct or indirect responsibility for safety, health, and loss prevention. This very im portant function serves to create a safe and healthful work environm ent for all em ­ ployees so that costly accidents involving m onetary and hum an loss can be avoided. Safety, health, and loss prevention also possesses a legal com po­ nent that requires that the em ployer achieve and m aintain com pliance with the m yriad of safety and health-related regulations and standards prom ul­ gated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and by state programs.
