The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (known as the “ADA”) has opened a huge new area of regulatory com pliance that will directly or indirectly af­ fect m ost em ergency m edical service organizations. In a nutshell, the ADA prohibits discrim ination against qualified individuals with physical or m ental disabilities in all em ploym ent settings. Given the im pact of the ADA on the job functions of em ployees, especially in the areas of w orkers’ com pensation, restricted duty program s, facility modifications, and other areas, it is critical for EMS m anagers to possess a firm grasp of the scope and requirem ents of this new law.
