ABSTRACT
The development of the novel in Turkey has paralleled the development of the modern Turkish state itself. The introduction of the novel into the Turkish language in the second half of the 19th century was but a small part of the massive transformation of Turkish society from the closed theocracy of the Ottoman Empire into a democratic, secular nation comprised of Westernstyle social and political institutions.
