ABSTRACT

The radical Muslim revolutionaries who overthrew the shah of Iran in 1979 gave birth to a wave of religious-based terrorism that aims to establish fundamentalist regimes in the Middle East. Targets of these zealots have included Israeli nationals, citizens of Western powers backing the Jewish state, and more moderate Arab nations. Fired by their religious fervor, the terrorists are willing to martyr themselves for their beliefs, and suicide bombers have become a disturbing feature of the terrorist attacks launched by the fundamentalists.
