ABSTRACT

Margaret Fuller works briefly as Alcott's assistant at his Temple School (1836-37), replacing Elizabeth Peabody. Fuller meets Ralph Waldo Emerson; spends three weeks as guest in his household. Emerson and Henry David Thoreau develop close friendship. In The American Nations, Constantine Rafinesque publishes translation of what he claims to be Leni-Lenape (Delaware) tribal chronicle "Walam Olum" with "the songs annexed thereto in the original language." Thomas Cole completes series of paintings "The Course of Empire."
