In 1864, on 70th birthday, honored by "Bryant Festival" at New York's Century Club, with speakers including Bayard Taylor, Oliver Wendell Holmes, George Henry Boker, and Julia Ward Howe. In 1865 wrote poems on death of Lincoln and abolition of slavery. Wife Frances died in July 1866. Sailed in October for Europe, visiting Spain and Italy (where he spent time with Giuseppe Garibaldi, whom he had met years earlier in New York). In 1869 delivered addresses in commemoration of Fitz-Greene Halleck and upon founding of Metropolitan Museum of Art. Published translations of Homer's Iliad (1870) and Odyssey (1871-72). In 1872 traveled in the Bahamas, Cuba, and Mexico (where he received honors from President Juarez). Prepared final edition of poems in 1876. In final years maintained busy schedule of dinners and addresses; last public address was an oration at unveiling of Mazzini statue in Central Park; died from injuries received in a fall following the ceremony.
