Agriculture is characterized by many dichotomies: between modern and traditional, between rain-fed between modern and traditional, between rain-fed and irrigated, between subsistence and irrigated, and between mechanized and labor-intenand small, and between mechanized and labor-intensive. Irrigation is used chiefly in regions receiving an annual rainfall of less than 51 cm (20 in.) and also in annual rainfall of less than 51 em (20 in.) and also in areas of great rainfall to supply the high water require areas of great rainfall to supply the high water requirements of certain crops such as rice. Despite the importance of food production in hungry world, agriculture remains labor intensive, agricultural products are subject to price fluctuations and agricultural pursuits are characterized by low productivity. Fishing is not only one of the oldest human occupations but also one of the most universal.
