ABSTRACT

In order to analyze developments in the manufacturing sector in the CIS countries, it is essential to look at the structural legacy of Soviet industry. To a large extent, the successor states of the Soviet Union have inherited their industrial structures from the single national economic complex that developed during the Soviet times. The Soviet economy had been developed as a closely linked system of enterprises and associations of enterprises scattered across an enormous territory, with supply chains crossing the borders of the former Soviet republics. There was an overemphasis on manufacturing and defense production, while the production of consumer goods and the development of service industries were relatively neglected.
