The term “psychometrics” refers in psychology to the science of assessment – more particularly the assessment of psychological characteristics of people. Sometimes, the term is used narrowly in connection with the development and use of paperand-pencil tests of, for example, intelligence and personality, although other forms of individual measurement/assessment are embraced by the term. Sometimes, the term is used in a loose way to refer to measurement more generally, such as in the use of questionnaires to measure other phenomena such as perceptions of organizations or in consumer/marketing or other research. To equate psychometrics with measurement more generally is perhaps to take too broad a view, even though many of the basic principles of measurement are those of psychometrics. Here, the term will be taken to apply to the assessment/measurement of psychological characteristics.
