ABSTRACT
The Dardanelles (the Greek Hellespont) is the narrow strait in north-western Turkey that separates Asiatic from European Turkey (the Gallipoli Peninsula) and guards the entrance from the Mediterranean and Aegean seas into the Sea of Marmara, whose waters at its eastern end pass through the Bosporus into the Black Sea. The straits are between three-quarters of a mile (1.2 km) and four miles (6.4 km) wide and 38 miles (61 km) in length. Ports along the straits include Gallipoli, Eceabat and Çanakkale.
