ABSTRACT

Apart from the medieval principalities of Europe, there are 38 landlocked countries worldwide and by virtue of their geographic situations, cut off from direct access to the sea, they are bound to be dependent upon the goodwill of one or more neighbours whose territory lies between them and international trade routes. With the exception of the Western European landlocked countries, the rest are poor and economically underdeveloped and their very remoteness, in most cases, has been an added factor contributing to their economic backwardness.
